It all started sometime in 2008… The recession was just kicking off and the economy was becoming a major challenge to us. Among the challenges of the economy hitting, our City was also hit with a challenge that not all companies go through like we did. We had been helping out a print broker (a print broker is someone who farms out their work to other printers) that was having medical issues (he was going through chemo which consisted of a rigorous treatment) and couldn’t handle his work flow, duties and obligations to his clients any longer. We brought him aboard and made him a Valley Press employee while he was addressing these medical issues. I had spent the last two years treating his clients as if they were my own, running around town doing deliveries, picking up artwork, i.e., just helping someone out who needs the help, putting aside the needs of Valley Press to build his clientele up… I was helping someone who desperately needed help.
In 2008, the person whom I’d been helping survive his cancer decided to start his print broker company up again, and in doing so he and two other Valley Press employees cleaned us out by taking files, artwork and everything else that was needed to start up his company again.
I must say that was the worst thing that anyone has ever done to me and also the best thing anyone has ever done for me. With your back to the wall, when you see no light at the end of the tunnel… your self-preservation kicks in. There was absolutely no way I was going to go out of business, a family business that had been in Las Vegas for 25 years.
So, with self-preservation driving me, I asked myself, “How can I market something that no one else in Las Vegas or the country gives out to potential clients?” It was out of this brainstorming that I arrived at “The Bowl”. It is a 12 inch vinyl record that we melt into the shape of a bowl. Since the Valley press Logo is round it was a no-brainer to take our logo and put it on top of the existing record label. We then fill it with Valley Press marketing material that states what Valley Press has to offer as well as the cutest little gifts ever.
Since we first started doing “The Bowl”, we have given out well over 200 bowls a week to potential clients. There is always someone calling me a genius because of the unique marketing value as well as saving of our planet by recycling used records. Due to my ingenuity, I have discovered a very unique approach to saving Valley Press!
